He’d been there since dawn first paled the sky, unmoving, unblinking. Unclothed-on a gusty, open deck in a winter far colder than was usual for the Vilhon Reach-the man seemed oblivious to the brisk wind that blew a spray so chilling that the sailors above worked with clumsy, cold-stiff fingers as they hauled up the canvas sail. The second was the fact that he was unclothed, save for his tight-fitting breeches and a black leather glove on his left hand. He lay facedown, his rigid arms holding his upper torso away from the wet fo’c’sle deck, his head bent back so that he appeared to be looking straight up at the spot where six sailors toiled above him, reefing the foresail. Two things, however, made him remarkable. His ornaments were few: a slim chunk of clear crystal hanging on a leather thong at his neck a bracelet of braided leather around his right wrist and a thumbnail-sized dark blue stone, flecked with gold, that he wore on his forehead in the spot where the Learned painted their marks. Of average build and height, and with dark, shoulder-length hair drawn into a knot at the back of his neck like a sailor’s tarred bun, he would have blended into any crowd. The man on the ship’s fo’c’sle would have gone unnoticed in other circumstances.

It is a time when people have been divided into two groups the Earthmen and the Spacers. The story is set on Earth some many years into the future. I would definitely recommend that reading order. It was really nice to have the context having read the “I, Robot”. “The Caves of Steel” often refers to both but without a whole lot of details. I was really glad that I did read the “I, Robot” first as it goes into the details of the Three Laws of Robotics and a positronic brain. It is also a detective which was surprisingly fun and easy to read. Unlike “I, Robot”, the “The Caves of Steel” consists of one cohesive story. Similar to “I, Robot” I consumed “The Caves of Steel” in an audio format and absolutely loved it. I started with “I, Robot” as I follow Asimov’s reading order (suggested by Asimov himself). This is the second book of Isaac Asimov that I’ve read. Tokue braves widespread prejudice to leave her community and teach struggling dorayaki pancake-maker Sentaro how to cook sweet bean paste. But what purpose is to be found for those individuals, such as leprosy-sufferer Tokue, who are deprived of an opportunity to contribute to society by being shut away in prison-like hospitals most of their lives? Leaning heavily on a sentimental philosophy of cosmic interconnectedness, Sukegawa makes Tokue his mouthpiece to promote a belief that humans exist to verify the existence of the universe. A common answer to this, in Japan, is that one must be “a useful member of society”. In an endnote, Sukegawa writes that he wanted to explore what “life is all about”. U ntil 1996, leprosy patients in Japan were forcibly isolated in sanatoriums, despite growing awareness that the disease was treatable and not very contagious: the disfigurement the disease could cause contributed to the prolonged policy of quarantine, even for the cured. Scarce 1784 edition of Hamilton’s bold work on the politics of war and peace, one of only two Philadelphia editions issued the same year as the New York first printing, issued under his pen name of “Phocion” in a fascinating reference to his own life by alluding to the Athenian soldier of “murky parentage” who came from another county and became the aid to a great general.
